What is our research focus?
Our research is focused on preserving kidney function and decreasing cardiovascular disease in patients with and without kidney disease.
Our primary interest is in understanding the mechanism of:
- Inflammation in CKD
- Progression of kidney disease
- Cardiovascular disease in CKD
- Gut microbiome in CKD
- Precision medicine
We also are exploring novel therapies to:
- Prevent and treat kidney disease
- Treatment of cardiovascular disease in CKD
- Optimal blood pressure control
How do we do it?
We use laboratory-based studies, translational approach, clinical trials and epidemiological studies. Currently, we explore
- Role of Non-coding RNA in CKD
- Microbiome in CKD
- Anti-inflammatory therapy for CKD and CVD
- Optimal blood pressure target and means of controlling blood pressure
What do we do?
We partner with the National Institute of Health, Educational Institutions across the world and community physicians in our mission to improve health of patients with CKD.
Why research in kidney disease is important?
- CKD affects more than 20 million adults in the US; an additional 20 million are at increased risk for developing CKD, and an estimated 80,000 people are diagnosed annually.
- CKD is the 9th leading cause of death in the US.
- Financial costs related to caring for these patients is formidable and annually on the rise.
- The consequence of CKD extends beyond health care economics with profound impact on quality of life and productivity.
